We are exicted to get started on a new year here at SID. Our location has changed from last year. We are now in room 238 of the HRCB. We have already had our had our first couple meetings.
At our most recent meeting, we discussed different opportunities available on campus to find opportunities to get involved in development opportunities while here on campus.
ORCA grants are available for research projects. These can give you $1500 to work with a faculty mentor on research. Past projects have involved development-related topics.Applications are due October 30.
BYU Field Studies offer another great opportunity to get hands on experience in development. These programs allow you to do research in the field on a more independent level. The Kennedy Center is responsible for the field study program at BYU.
Internships also offer invaluable experience in development. BYU has internship programs established with several organizations involved with development. Another option is to organize an internship with an organization that you feel would be a better fit. The BYU development network has connections with development organizations all over the world.
If coordinated through the Kennedy Center, course credit and supplementary funds may be available for both field studies and internships. In order to ensure that you will be able to get as much assistance as possible from BYU, it is recommended that you begining working with the Kennedy Center several months in advance.
In addition to the SID funding, there are other many other methods of fund-raising to facilitate a meaningful development experience. Additionally, there are dozens of opportunities to get involved with short-term projects or local development organizations. At each SID meeting, we will discuss some of the ways you can get involved in development projects.
At the meeting we also tapped some of the experiences of members of SID in development. People with development experience wrote a brief description of their experiences and provided contact information. We had several people descrribe experiences in Africa, the Middle East/Europe, Latin America, Asia and the United States. If readers would like further information about these experiences feel free to contact a member of SID presidency and we will be happy to give you further information.
