Hunger Banquet Kickoff

From SID MEETINGS

This year's Hunger Banquet will be integrated into SID's motto: "Learn, Connect, Do." We also will try to support the hunger banquet theme of the human dignity.

For those who haven't been to the Hunger Banquet, this will be the twentieth hunger banquet at BYU. Each year it has grown and this year we hope to have it bigger than ever. It will be held in the Wilkinson Center Ballroom on March 5th and 6th.

The basic arrangement is that each person will pay the same price for a ticket to the banquet. As they enter the banquet, each person will be randomly assigned to a certain meal. 10% will be served a three-course meal. Another 20% will be assigned to a middle-income appropriate meal. The remaining 70% will be assigned to eat a meal of rice and beans on the floor. The proceeds from the tickets will go to non-government organizations that are working on development around the world. During last year's Hunger Banquet, we raised $15,000 dollars which went to 6 different ngos.

During the banquet, we will be hearing from Martin Burt. There also will be live performers and entries to the creative competition. The creative competition is now taking place. Everyone is encouraged to participate, regardless of their level of involvement in SID.  We hope to emphasize the dignity of those who poor through this competition. We welcome all forms of media: sculpture, photography, creative writing, art work, film, etc. Projects should be submitted by February 18th. For more information visit the Hunger Banquet website.

We also heard from each of the committees for the Hunger Banquet. We will need a lot of help to make sure that this year's hunger banquet is the best it can be. We have created a wiki page for those willing to help with the hunger banquet. At this page you can look at each of the committees and how much help will be needed. You also can post ideas and suggestions on the wiki.
